EYELID SURGERY (BLEPHAROPLASTY)
The eyes are often one of the most vulnerable areas to the signs aging. The skin around our eyes is very delicate and can become droopy or wrinkly, causing us to look older in spite of how youthful or vibrant we feel on the inside. Eyelid surgery, or Blepharoplasty, can restore the eyes to a well-rested and younger-looking state.

WHAT IS EYELID SURGERY?
Eyelid surgeries are an ideal cosmetic solution for patients who have puffiness, under-eye bags or deep wrinkles around their eyes. Eyelid surgery restores tighter skin around the eyes, reduces fatty deposits and achieves an awakened, rejuvenated appearance.
The procedure is more typically performed on patients over the age of 35 but can be performed on younger patients as well, particularly when large under-eye bags or eyelids impair vision. The skin around an individual’s eyes is very delicate and can lose elasticity quickly, creating an “aged” look. Skin elasticity varies from individual to individual, and is affected by genetics, lifestyle, and sun exposure. Overexposure to the sun is known to lead to premature signs of aging. However, even with the best skin care and sun protection, some of the effects of aging are inevitable. Individuals who are genetically predisposed to develop bags or fatty deposits under their eyes are excellent candidates for this surgery.
As you age, the muscles around the eyes can weaken, leading to drooping eyelids that may also impair vision. Eyelid surgery can reduce droopiness and help to restore eyesight. Eyelid surgeries are highly customizable with many of the technical aspects depending on the goals of the patient or the specifics of their bodies.
BENEFITS OF EYELID SURGERY
You may be tired of using ice packs and moisturizers to reduce undereye bags and wrinkles or you may be embarrassed because your vision is impaired by droopy eyelids. This procedure can restore a younger look and match your outward appearance to how youthful and vibrant you feel on the inside. Incisions are made in natural lines around the eyes, resulting in little to no scarring. Instead of using short-term methods, you may want to look into eyelid surgery that can produce a long-lasting result that boosts your confidence. Eyelid surgery is highly effective and offers an excellent safety record.
A blepharoplasty can:
Remove excess fat from eyelids and reduce wrinkles.
Achieve natural-looking rejuvenation.
Boost a patient’s self-confidence.
Improve their vision.
Achieve long-term results.
IS EYELID SURGERY RIGHT FOR ME?
While most patients undergoing eyelid surgery are over the age of 35, it may also be performed on younger patients, particularly in the case of vision interference or when heredity has resulted in overly large under-eye bags or drooping eyelids. Both men and women choose this procedure to achieve a youthful and well-rested facial appearance.
Although most adults can undergo blepharoplasty, a few medical conditions may increase the risk of complications, including the following:
High blood pressure
Both men and women can enjoy long-term benefits from receiving this surgery and restore their youthful appearance.
In the time leading up to the scheduled surgery date, there are a number of preparatory steps you can take to ensure the best possible experience.
Before your eyelid surgery you will:
Have a physical examination in which Dr. Gupta will confirm your overall health.
Have a vision examination. Dr. Gupta will examine your eyes and make sure your vision is good.
Have photos taken of your eyelids and/or under the eye. Your eyes will need to be photographed so that they can be evaluated. Photos help Dr. Gupta plan the surgery and better predict the outcome of the surgery.
Stop taking common medications such as Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Advil, Motrin, and any other medications that can increase bleeding.
If you smoke, you will be asked to stop a few weeks prior to your surgery. Smoking has a direct effect on your recovery and leads to complications during surgery.
Before you go in for your procedure, plan for someone to drive you to and from the surgery. It would also be helpful for you to arrange for someone to keep you company at home for the first night after returning from the procedure.
THE EYELID LIFT PROCEDURE
Eyelid surgery typically takes one to three hours and is performed under local anesthesia. The first step is the creation of incisions in natural skin folds located either above or below the eye. If one of the goals of the eyelid surgery is to reduce the appearance of “crow’s feet” wrinkles, these incisions may continue past the corners of the eyes so that the surgeon can access this tissue. In some cases, the excess tissue in the lower eyelid can be removed from behind the eyelid, rather than through an incision created for this purpose.
Next, your eyelid surgeon gently removes small areas of fat and other excess tissues from the area of the eyelids. Once the targeted tissues have been removed or recontoured, the incision is closed using surgical tape or small sutures.
If the eyelid surgery involves reducing “crow’s feet” around the eye, then the incisions can go past the corners of the eyes for better access. In some situations, the extra tissue that resides in the lower lid can be removed from behind the eyelid, which keeps all surgical marks completely out of view.
Lower eyelid surgeries have long-lasting results and rarely need to be repeated. Upper eyelid surgery results normally last up to five or seven years. Both men and women are candidates for this surgery and can achieve great, natural-looking results.
Full recovery is complete in about two weeks. Patients can return to normal activities after 10 to 14 days depending on swelling and bruising. After eyelid surgery, the doctor will instruct you to use antiseptic ointment or eye drops, which prevents the eyes from becoming dry. Paper tape will be used to support the eyelids in their new position. Gauze may also be used for a few days after your eyelid procedure.
EYELID SURGERY RESULTS
Immediately after the surgery, the final results of the procedure may not be fully visible. When swelling subsides and the majority of healing is complete, you can expect tighter skin around your eyes and a reduction in puffiness and bags. Your expression will be rejuvenated, refreshed and may look as much as ten years younger.
