Breast lift (also known as mastopexy) procedures can help to improve the appearance of breasts that sag or look deflated. This condition, known as ptosis, can be caused by gravity and the natural aging process, as well as pregnancy, substantial weight loss, and other conditions.

The breast lift procedure, or mastopexy, may be combined with breast implants to increase the volume of the breasts while correcting their position on the chest.

Breast lifts can improve the appearance of breasts that sag, point downward, and lack firmness or substance. Women who describe their breasts as feeling “empty” or as if there is too much skin for the volume of the breasts may benefit from a breast lift. Breast lift procedures reduce the saggy and deflated look, resulting in more youthful-looking breasts.

Breast lifts may be performed on adult women of any age, although it is recommended that women wait until they are done with pregnancy, breastfeeding, or planned weight loss. These events are likely to impact the breast shape, which could require revision surgeries. Most women in good overall health are medically able to undergo a mastopexy procedure.

One way that may be used to determine whether you could benefit from this procedure is to place a pencil in the crease underneath the breasts. If the sagging breast tissue holds it in place, the appearance of the breasts could be improved. It may also be helpful to view breast lift before and after photos to gauge the potential benefits of this procedure.

Breast lift procedures typically take two to three hours and are performed with general anesthesia. Before the procedure, your surgeon will discuss your expectations with you so that you have realistic expectations about the amount of lifting and improvement possible.

During a breast lift, the surgeon creates an incision to remove excess skin and lift breast tissue to an elevated position on the chest. There are several methods in which this can be accomplished; incision sites and sizes depend on the method used. In some cases, breast implants will be added to increase the volume of breast tissue. Once the breasts have been sculpted to the desired appearance, sutures are used to close the incisions.

Most breast lift patients plan about a week away from work and other obligations. In addition, strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided for four to six weeks.surgical bra should be worn to reduce discomfort and support the breasts in the correct position as they heal.
